PAINFUL MENSTRUATION (DYSMENORRHEA)
In an epidemiological study in Danish women based upon self administered questionnaires concerning menstrual history, present symptoms, and dietary habits, it was discovered that low intake of omega-3 acids in the diet correlated with increased menstrual pain (Painful menstruation and low intake of n-3 fatty acids, Ugeskr Laeger. 1996 Jul 15;158(29):4195-8).
Furthermore, dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids were shown to relieve symptoms of dysmenorrhea in a study done at Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH (Supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the management of dysmenorrhea in adolescents, Am J Obstet Gynecol. 1996 Apr;174(4):1335-8).
DOSAGE FOR ANTI-AGING PURPOSES
For fish oil supplements, dosing should be based on the amount of EPA and DHA (omega-3 fatty acids) in a product, not on the amount of fish oil. Supplements vary in the amounts and ratios of EPA and DHA. A common amount of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil capsules is 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA.
The World Health Organization recommends taking 300-500 grams of daily EPA + DHA, which would work out to 2 capsules a day, 1 at breakfast and one at lunch.
It also probably wouldn’t hurt to eat a lot of fish.
