DEPRESSION
Depression has been extensively reported to be associated with low dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids and low levels of EPA and DHA in the blood (Omega-3 fatty acids and major depression: a primer for the mental health professional, Lipids Health Dis 2004;3(1):25).
An 8-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial performed at China Medical College Hospital in Taiwan demonstrated that patients who were given supplements of omega-3 fatty acids had a significantly decreased score on the 21-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression as compared to the placebo group (Omega-3 fatty acids in major depressive disorder. A preliminary double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Eur Neuropsychopharmacol. 2003 Aug;13(4):267-71).
