ARTHRITIS

A randomised, double blind, placebo controlled study done at State University Groningen, The Netherlands, demonstrated that dietary fish oil supplementation is effective in suppressing clinical symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, such as joint swelling index and duration of early morning stiffness (Effects of fish oil supplementation in rheumatoid arthritis, Ann Rheum Dis. 1990 February; 49(2): 76–80).

CANCER

A number of epidemiological studies strongly imply that a diet high in fish oils, which contain omega-3 fatty acids, can help prevent the development of a variety of cancers, including breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Basically, these studies show that people with diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids — i.e. people who eat a lot of fish — get fewer of the discussed types of cancer than their none fish eating counterparts. (A prospective study of intake of fish and marine fatty acids and prostate cancer. Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2003;12(1):64-67; Omega-3 fatty acids as cancer chemopreventive agents. Pharmacol Ther 1999;83(3):217-244; Possible beneficial effect of fish and fish n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in breast and colorectal cancer. Eur J Cancer Prev 1999;8(3):213-221).
