SUPPLEMENTS

Supplements are unfortunately necessary (see my post Why People Need to Take Nutritional Supplements for details), but they should not be regarded as a panacea.

For example, it would probably be wise to take a good multivitamin and some other nutritional supplements as nutritional insurance (see my post Anti-Aging Supplementation Options for more details), but it would be foolish to think that just because you’re taking vitamins, you can eat whatever you want and your nutritional needs will be covered.

It doesn’t work that way. Vitamins and minerals (and whatever other substances scientists haven’t yet discovered that are crucial to our health) are going to be more bioavailable in food than in pills. Let’s face it — nature is a better nutritionist than any scientist.

By the same token, there are plenty of supplements that have proven to be useful in such ways as lowering LDL cholesterol (see my post High Cholesterol Drugs and Supplements), but it would be a mistake to think you could revert to bad habits such as eating cheeseburgers and milkshakes whenever you want just because you’re taking cholesterol lowering supplements. (By the way, I am not talking down to anybody. I have the same inclination to want to continue engaging in unhealthy lifestyle practices as most people. It’s human nature.)
