LOSS OF MUSCLE MASS
Once you lose muscle mass, metabolic syndrome sets in. Muscle mass is one of the major determinants of setting the body’s metabolic rate. When metabolic rate drops, people tend to put on weight in the abdominal region, leading to increased insulin resistance and possibly diabetes. Therefore, in order to slow down or reverse the wasting away of lean muscle mass and the aging related problems that snowball as a result, it is necessary to do strength training.
FLEXIBILITY TRAINING
And let’s not forget stretching. When doing strength training, it is important to stretch before and after, and not simply to prevent muscle injuries. Stretching allows blood and nutrition to flow to the muscles. It also assists in carrying away waste products produced in the muscles during exercise, preventing soreness. Finally, stretching increases the range of motion, which allows you to recruit more muscle fibers during strength training, resulting in a greater increase in muscle mass from exercise.
