Pretty much everyone knows that exercise is a major component of good health. Most people are well aware that cardiovascular exercise can help to prevent heart disease, but the benefits of exercise go way beyond that.

CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING

In a study of 17,000 Harvard alumni over a 30 year period, it was found that moderate exercise, such as jogging, swimming, or tennis decreased overall death rate by 25-33%, and not just from heart disease but from all causes of death (JAMA 1995 Apr 19;273(15) :1179-84). Interestingly, intense exercise, such as marathons, actually increased the death rate, because of the damage to the body caused by oxidative stress.

STRENGTH TRAINING

Strength training can also help keep you young. Have you ever noticed that old people tend to have less muscle mass than younger people? As people age and fewer hormones related to muscle growth are secreted, less muscle protein is produced, which can result in the wasting away of lean muscle mass. This tendency is exacerbated by the modern lifestyle (see my post The Modern Lifestyle - Slow Suicide), which does not incorporate strength building as a natural result of day to day activities.
