KEEPING TRACK OF YOUR HEART RATE
How do you keep track of your heart rate? Well, if you can carry on a normal conversation, then you are probably not exceeding your target heart rate. This is the standard to use if you are engaged in some kind of sport, like tennis or basketball, where you don’t really have the opportunity to check your heart rate continuously. However, if engaging in a solo activity such as jogging, brisk walking or using a Stairmaster, then a more scientific approach would be more useful.
Under these conditions, the best way to keep track is your heart rate monitor. The monitor itself is strapped around your chest and you wear a watch which communicates with the monitor and beeps if you venture outside of your target heart rate.

If you are working out on a Stairmaster or similar device, it will communicate with the monitor and generate a readout of your heart rate so you can keep track of your heart rate.
Here is a well reviewed example of a heart rate monitor, the Omron HR-100C Heart Rate Monitor. For more information, hover your mouse over the product image.
