CALCULATING YOUR TARGET HEART RATE
So, how do you calculate your target heart rate? You start with your maximum heart rate, which is calculated:
Maximum Heart Rate = 220 - Your Age.
So, if you were 60 years old, your Maximum Heart Rate would be 160 beats per minute. So, the lower end of your Target Heart Rate would be 60% of 160 or 96 beats per minute. The upper end of your target heart rate would be 80% of 160 or 128 beats per minute. So, taken altogether, the calculation for target heart rate looks like this:
Lower End Target Heart Rate = (220 - Your Age) * .6
Upper End Target Heart Rate = (220 - Your Age) * .8
