IS IT A MYTH?
First of all, is it just a myth that people gain weight when they quit smoking? Not at all. Most people gain 5 to 10 pounds after they quit smoking. There are several reasons for this.
Smoking tends to artificially elevate metabolism, so when a person quits smoking, their metabolism becomes lower and they put on weight. Another reason people gain weight is because quitting smoking is stressful. Prolonged stress stimulates the production of cortisol, which increases weight gain, particularly in the abdominal area.
We all know that being overweight and smoking cause premature aging and shorten life span. So, the million dollar question is, should a person quit smoking first or lose weight first?
