OTHER STUDIES OF INTEREST
1) Another study at Tufts concluded that “The rapid absorption of glucose after consumption of high-GI meals induces a sequence of hormonal and metabolic changes that promote excessive food intake in obese subjects.” (PEDIATRICS Vol. 103 No. 3 March 1999, p. e26)
2) A study at King’s College London showed that a “…diet high in carbohydrates with high glycemic indexes (GI) and glycemic load were linked to risk of coronary heart disease development in women….” (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 76, No. 1, 286S-289S, July 2002)
3) Most damning of all is a study conducted by Alan Barclay, Joanna McMillan Price, and Professor Jennie Brand-Miller, in which they demonstrated links between a high GI diet and type 2 diabetes, heart disease, gall stones and some types of cancer (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition March 1 [2008; 87 (3)]).
I would say that the case against high glycemic index foods is pretty conclusive, wouldn’t you?
