WESTERN MEDICINE
Western medical solutions (otherwise known as allopathic medicine) should be viewed as a last resort. Why? For several reasons.
First of all, Western medical solutions are designed for acute conditions. That is, you’ve already abused your body to the point that it’s screaming for help (i.e. you’ve developed one of the lifestyle diseases such as diabetes).
Much better to just live a healthy lifestyle and avoid the problem in the first place. (Of course, there are circumstances where Western medicine is just the ticket. Like when you break your leg, for example. You can’t beat setting the leg and putting a cast on it.)
Second, Western medicines tend to be developed to solve a very specific problem in a very specific way with little regard for collateral damage. For example, the statin drugs are designed to lower LDL cholesterol. However, they don’t raise HDL (the good cholesterol) or affect Lp(a), a lipoprotein which is highly predictive of heart disease, in any meaningful way.
Meanwhile, statin drugs have been shown to be carcinogenic (they cause cancer), and have a number of other cheery side effects (see my post High Cholesterol Drugs and Supplements for more details).
They also have the disadvantage of tending to make people complacent. Want to eat cheeseburgers? Go ahead. Just make sure to take your statin drugs. Yeah, sure. Right.
